The success of your nonprofit’s service to our community is a crucial consideration to every campaign we prepare for broadcast. WNUZ will take in all the information you provide and discuss with our team of volunteers dedicated to presenting a quality, professionally produced campaign we’ll incorporate into our programming day.
Think outside the traditional boxed way of presenting your ideas. We’re willing to be creative, innovative and unique. Pairing campaigns with station promotions and events is a great way to include your nonprofit in all the community service work WNUZ does throughout the year, in person, online and on the air.
WNUZ is committed to serving Lancaster County and the Brandywine Valley with our mission of “Improving, enhancing and protecting the quality of life for all of Lancaster and Chester Counties”. WNUZ respects all of the hard work and effort of your organization and it’s reputation among our audience. WNUZ takes the time to listen and identify your organizations needs, ability to achieve and what we could do to make it happen. Helping your organization directly helps WNUZ’s audience.
WNUZ is a licensed, non-commercial, nonprofit LPFM community radio station. LPFM is a class of FM license established in 2000 to help local communities across the United States open up access to the airwaves and to help those communities raise awareness of local issues, culture, government affairs etc. Because of this class of license, WNUZ can not air paid commercial advertisements. In stead, we may air underwriting announcements to thank commercial entities for their financial support to cover our operational expenses. The content and wording of these messages, along with nonprofit underwriting messages are regulated by the FCC. As a professional, community radio station with nearly a quarter century of experience operating in Lancaster and Chester Counties, WNUZ’s dedicated volunteers know how to reach the goal in compliance every time, and make it effective.
For many, this may be the first you’re learning about all of this. So, WNUZ has put together a easy to follow guide, so that you can see the restraints or limitations imposed by the FCC. This should give you a general idea of what we consider when taking your organization’s ideas and applying them to the law before creatively producing the final broadcast version of your organization’s campaign. We hope you find it an informative and educational guide, and that this helps to answer any legal or related questions you may have. When you’re ready to take the next step, scroll to the bottom to input some general information, and we’ll be in touch. Thank you again for your time and interest in allowing WNUZ to serve your nonprofit organization.
Lets start with the basic question, How can a local nonprofit organization be promoted on a LPFM station for free?
A local nonprofit can promote itself for free on an LPFM station by creating community-focused programming, like PSAs or interviews, and by offering “underwriting” (sponsorship mentions) that identify the nonprofit and its mission without promotional language, adhering strictly to FCC rules against paid ads, calls to action, or pricing, which prevents true “free” promotion of events but allows vital community messaging within noncommercial guidelines.
- Community Service Announcements (PSAs): Create short, non-promotional announcements about upcoming events, needs, or services, focusing on the mission.
- Program Sponsorship: Offer underwriting messages (e.g., “This hour of music brought to you by [Nonprofit Name], supporting local families”) instead of paid ads.
- Feature Segments: Host interviews, live reports, or dedicate shows to your nonprofit’s work, providing in-depth, mission-focused content.
- Volunteer Spotlights: Highlight volunteers or beneficiaries to build community awareness and attract support.
Key FCC Limitations (What You Cannot Do)- No Paid Advertising: LPFM stations (and all noncommercial educational stations) cannot broadcast paid advertisements for commercial entities or promote for-profit products/services.
- No “Call to Action”: You can’t say “Call now!” or “Buy tickets!” or give prices for events.
- No “Qualitative” Language: Avoid words like “best,” “great,” or “lowest price”.
- Fundraising Restrictions: You can interrupt programming for fundraisers, but they must be for the station or other non-profits, require disclosures, and have limitations.
- Focus on Mission: Promotion must be about the organization’s purpose, not commercial transactions or personal gain, to fit within noncommercial guidelines.
How to Get Started- Contact WNUZ: WNUZ is a local LPFM station and proposes specific, mission-aligned programming ideas.
