Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will host a public hearing to obtain comments from the public on an interim response to treat the release of a hazardous substance along Allen Road in Cumberland County. The hearing is scheduled to be held Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at 7:00 PM at the Cumberland County Extension Office, 310 Allen Road, Carlisle, PA 17013.
The Allen Road site consists of a mixture of residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural properties in Carlisle Borough and South Middleton, North Middleton, West Pennsboro, and Dickinson townships. One residential and two commercial properties in the area utilize private wells that have been contaminated with the volatile organic compound (VOC) trichloroethylene (TCE) above the Safe Drinking Water Standard of five parts per billion. In order to reduce or eliminate exposure to the contaminated water supplies, DEP installed a point-of-entry treatment (POET) system at the residential property. One of the commercial properties self-installed a POET treatment system while the other offers bottled water to its customers.
Persons wishing to present oral comments at the hearing are asked to pre-register before December 13, 2019, by calling or emailing Mr. Steven DeMars at 717-705-4832 or sdemars@pa.gov. If no person registers to present oral comments, the hearing will not be held but will be replaced with an informational meeting.
DEP will accept written comments to be included in the administrative record until February 7, 2020. Comments may be mailed to Mr. DeMars at the DEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110, dropped off in person, or emailed to sdemars@pa.gov. Copies of the administrative record are available for public viewing at the South Middleton Township Building, 520 Park Drive, Boiling Springs, PA 17007, and at the DEP Southcentral Regional Office. Please call 717-705-4732 to schedule an appointment.
