On Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 10:06 PM, officers from the West Hempfield Township Police Department were dispatched to the Chickies Rock County Park for a report of someone firing rounds from a pistol. A Lancaster County Park Ranger reported that he was at the park and that he had heard six gunshots fired inside the park.
Moments later officers from the West Hempfield Township Police Department were informed that a Lancaster County Park Ranger located the male that had fired the shots in the park, and that he had recovered the firearm.
The male was identified as 25 year old, Cody Tyler Sweitzer-Harrington, of Manheim, PA.
Sweitzer-Harrington admitted to police that a friend gave him the .40 caliber KAHR pistol to target shoot in the park, that he had fired the shots in the park toward the river, and that because he was a convicted felon, he knew that he was not to be in possession of the firearm.
Officers reported that Sweitzer-Harrington had also been consuming alcohol on the park property.
The defendant was placed into custody without incident, and then processed at the West Hempfield Township Police Department.
Officers also learned that Sweitzer-Harrington was on probation.
Officers reported that the Lancaster County Probation issued a Detainer for Sweitzer-Harrington, and that he was transported to the Lancaster County Prison.
Officers reported that they did not learn the identity of the owner of the firearm. The firearm was not registered.
Continuing on the same date, the following charges were filed against Sweitzer-Harrington at MDJ Miles Bixler’s Office in Columbia: One count of Persons not to possess use manufacture control sell or transfer firearms, Section 6105 A-1 (F-2), and one count of Defiant trespasser Section 3505 B-1 (ii) (S).
