Harrisburg, PA – Continuing Governor Tom Wolf’s strategic investments to prepare students and young adults for successful careers, Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) Secretary Jerry Oleksiak today announced more than $4.7 million has been awarded to provide nearly 1,500 summer internships across Pennsylvania through the State/Local Internship Program (SLIP).
“This program will help young people get the real-world work experience they need for a good career in Pennsylvania,” said Secretary Oleksiak. “This investment strengthens our future workforce, in addition to creating a new, job-ready talent pool for employers across the commonwealth who need skilled workers.”
The department awarded SLIP funding to 21 Local Workforce Development Boards (LWDBs) that submitted proposals. The program, funded through the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), helps young adults develop workforce preparation skills by providing participants with their first work experience.
The 2020 SLIP will operate for an eight-week period between May 1 and August 28, 2020. The program will offer wages at a minimum of $10.35 an hour for young adults between ages 16 and 24.
