Harrisburg, PA – On Monday, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) welcomed nine new governing members appointed by Governor Shapiro following a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony presided over by Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt.  A commissioner orientation was also held to familiarize the new appointees with their roles and responsibilities as commissioners and introduce them to senior commission staff.

PHMC is the official history agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Created in 1945, it is responsible for the collection, conservation, and interpretation of Pennsylvania’s historic heritage. This is accomplished through the Pennsylvania State Archives, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Trails of History (23 historic sites and museums), the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office, and the Bureau of Management Services.

PHMC consists of the Secretary of Education, or his designee; nine residents of the Commonwealth appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of a majority of the members elected to the Senate; and four members of the General Assembly, or their designees, two from the Senate—one appointed by the President Pro Tempore and one by the Minority Leader—and two from the House of Representatives—one appointed by the Speaker and one by the Minority Leader.

The nine new commissioners are:

Hayley Haldeman, Pittsburgh, Chair

C. Kim Bracey, York

Allison Dorsey, Swarthmore

William V. Lewis Jr., Pittston

Robert Malley, Apollo

Andrew Masich, Pittsburgh

Caleb M. Pifer, Erie

Randell H. Spackman, West Chester

Ken Weinstein, Philadelphia

They join Secretary of Education Khalid N. Mumin (ex officio), represented by Susan Banks, and the commissioners appointed by the General Assembly, Senator Michele Brooks, Jamestown; Senator Tim Kearney, Swarthmore; Representative Robert F. Matzie, Ambridge; and Representative Parke Wentling, Greenville.
