Harrisburg, PA – Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding today urged Pennsylvania’s dairy farmers to take advantage of the Margin Protection Program for dairy, or MPP-Dairy, by signing up ahead of the June 1 deadline.
“Our dairy producers are facing unprecedented challenges right now, but MPP-Dairy can help ease the sting of financial uncertainty today and in the future,” said Redding. “The recent program changes made by the USDA have helped to provide real, meaningful income protection.
Use the online tool or visit your local FSA office to determine a plan that best meets your needs.”
MPP-Dairy is a voluntary risk management program for dairy producers offered by the United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency. The program provides protection to producers when the difference between the all milk price and the average feed cost falls below a certain dollar amount. “Every little bit of income helps right now,” Redding added. “Take full advantage of this program to weather this storm.
The Wolf Administration has undertaken a number of initiatives to strengthen the commonwealth’s dairy industry, including actively working to attract new processors to Pennsylvania, petitioning the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board to seek reforms to address ongoing challenges in the dairy market, and working with stakeholders to produce a Dairy Development Plan.
Additionally, the department partnered last week to announce “Choose PA Dairy: Goodness that Matters” with the Center for Dairy Excellence, Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association, PA Preferred, American Dairy Association Northeast, and Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania, to encourage consumers to shop specifically for milk produced and bottled in Pennsylvania.
